Local Information
The cottage is located near to the hamlet of Sellafirth along a single track road. Sellafirth has a postbox, telephone box, bus stop, internet cafe, local hall, and several craft workshops.
The road continues past the cottage until it turns into a track which leads to a derelict house and sheep pund errected in the 1860's by John Walker. Past the house on the point of burness, the headland there is the ruins of a broch, an iron age dwelling.
The cottage is only approximately 2.4 miles away from Gutcher. Gutcher is the departure point for ferries heading to Unst and Fetlar, fares between Yell, Fetlar and Unst have been abolished. So you can meander around the islands at your own leisure without worrying about ferry fares. Gutcher is also home to the Wind Dog Cafe, serving hot and cold snacks through-out the day.
Basta voe which the cottage overlooks, is one of the location that Hugh Mills filmed "Track of the Otter" in the 1980's. The voe is still an ideal site to spot otters and seals. Below is a picture I took while walking three dogs along the banks. Unfortunately my camera isn't very good but below you can see a picture of my dog Meg about 2 metres away from an otter.

Yell
The island of Yell is a great location for exploring the outer islands. Yell is connected to the mainland of Shetland by an Inter-island ferry service which runs frequently and takes 20 minutes to cross.
The island of Yell has many attractions, from beautiful unspoilt sandy beaches, untamed moorland, haunted houses, a small local heritage museum called the Old Haa along with the usual facilities such as- local shops with petrol pumps, post offices, health centre, leisure centre with swimming pool and the local pub which serves bar lunches.

By far Mary's shop located in Aywick, is definately worth a visit. It is a tardis, selling a wide variety of gifts, groceries and hardware. There is even a charity shop situated at the back and is not far from the white wife. The white wife is a figurehead from a ship that ran aground in 1924, with the loss of 4 lifes. The figure points out to sea and was errected as a memorial for those that lost their lifes.
